History

PTSD & the 12-step program

Understanding why the 12-step model is uniquely suited to veteran and family recovery.

Veterans having struggles within the family have had exceptional turnarounds — with themselves and with their families — when the whole family is involved in recovery. This unique program of self-help is a huge investment for the community at large.

The results have shown that veterans and their families experience unification in lieu of divorce, fewer domestic disturbances, lower hospitalization due to alcoholism, reduced DUIs, and veterans acting on hope instead of life-threatening thoughts.

The VA has no programs available related to the family unit for the recovery of PTSD. Veterans' recovery will happen more effectively when they are working together with other veterans and their families. Windmill 12 may be the first campus dedicated entirely to family recovery.

That's the gap Windmill 12 exists to fill.

PTSD and addiction don't just affect the veteran — they affect the entire family. Research consistently shows that recovery is more effective when the family heals together. Windmill 12 may be the first campus in the country dedicated entirely to family-based veteran recovery.
